the Wednesday hodgepodge

Happy Wednesday, friends, and happy October! I'm here with Joyce again today for the weekly hodgepodge...this is a post that I dearly love; thank you, Joyce, for your inspiring and thought provoking questions each and every week! I'll jump right in.

1. What's your favorite fall scent? Would we find this in or around your home right now? Without a doubt, I always lean towards a scent that smells like something baking in the fall. Anything that is maple, pumpkin, or cinnamon scented will always my go to at this time of year. You would definitely find these scents in my home right now!

2. October is country music month...are you a fan of country music? Do you have a favorite country artist? Ever been to Nashville? In terms of lifestyle, are you more city mouse or country mouse? I love country music; it's what I listen to the most right now, honestly. I have lots of favorites: Morgan Wallen, Riley Green, Ella Langley, Darius Rucker, Thomas Rhett, Old Dominion, The Chicks, Kacey Musgraves...I could go on. I have been to Nashville many, many times in my life. I love both city and country, but I am definitely a city mouse.

These pictures above were from our first annual blogger's trip to Nashville in 2024! The adorable striped building is owned by Reese Witherspoon.

3. How about "country cooking"? Which of the following foods listed is your favorite? I love any and all country cooking! I love all the foods listed below, but my favorites are definitely biscuits and gravy and my Mom's fried chicken. It's to die for!

chicken and dumplings, fried chicken, shrimp and grits, biscuits and gravy, mac and cheese, fried green tomatoes, cornbread, collard or turnip greens, deviled eggs, barbecue, gumbo, banana pudding

The above is what a typical holiday spread at Mom's and Bill's looks like.

4. What's something that's always had a positive impact on your mood? I have a full proof method on the days when my mood sucks: I start writing a gratitude list.

5. As we say so long to September, share a noun, verb, and an adjective that tells us something about how that month looked for you.

a noun: transition
a verb: nestle
an adjective: golden

6. Insert your own random thought here. I stumbled across a song last night that just about took me out. It's one by Parker McCollum. I immediately sent it to Marilyn.

I can't wait to read your answers to these prompts! Thanks for being here to read my blog today, friends. Love to all!

Jenn xoxo

  1. Your mom´s Christmas spread has me excited about the holidays :) (Except I´m almost always the one hosting and making most of the items... not as exciting, lol, but still a good time to have everyone together.) I like baking scents too which is what my ¨house scent¨ is. Have a great day!

    1. Gosh, me too! 🤣 I saw that you enjoyed the same scents as me. Did I comment on your post??? I thought I did, but now I'm second guessing myself.

  2. I like your words. Your mom's holiday spread looks amazing! Do you know how to make her fried chicken?

    1. I had to use Chat GPT! I was drawing a blank. Her food IS amazing! I don't; I don't actually fry anything. I did one time early on in my adult years, and I almost started a fire.

  3. I'm just checking in. Is "Currently" happening this month? I miss it but understand other things might be taking priority.

    1. Good morning! I'm so sorry, but yes, it's live now. It totally slipped my mind! I feel like I'm losing it over here. Thanks for checking!

  4. Wow, what a song! Such a tough thing to live through. You are the first post I've come across where you said "city mouse". I *think* I might be, but have never lived in the city so who knows?? I love visiting for sure and know 100% I'm NOT "country" (but love country music - ha!). Have a GOLDEN week!

    1. About that song...right??? I felt the same way when I heard it for the first time yesterday. Country music definitely has all the emotions mixed into the lyrics. That's funny that I'm the first one you've come across that said that; Marilyn feels the same! I love the energy a city has and would be tempted to live in a downtown area if I had to move. I love that last thought...you do the same and have a golden week yourself, my friend!

  5. I love this time of year for all the scented candles. My family get very disappointed when they walk in and think I have been baking and then realise it was just a candle.
Yum! That holiday spread at your mom & Bills looks amazing!

    1. Yes! That is hilarious about them thinking you're baking something every time they come home. Maybe you should bake them something for real? 🤣 Thanks, friend! It's always delicious.

  6. That holiday table looks so good! I think I used to be more of a city mouse, but living in a rural area has changed my mind. Also, all the crazies that seem to be out there now make me more cautious about cities. I can't handle all the traffic anymore. When you live in a city you just accept it, but now that I've been away from it I feel very impatient driving in traffic. Hope you have a great day!

    1. Isn't it amazing? I totally get how rural living could change your mind, and that's true about more people to do things while living in a city. I do think we learn to get used to what we do, you know? I loved these prompts!

  8. Oh yes, all those scents scream fall to me. I too like my house to smell like I've just baked something yummy and sweet. Only problem is that the smell often makes me start craving something yummy & sweet! I am definitely a country mouse. I had anxiety for 3 days about driving in Hartford and taking Evan to that concert. I HATE traffic and figuring out parking in cities where there is never, ever enough parking.

    1. You are so right! That always happens to me when I light a yummy smelling candle. I remember your aversion to cities and parking/traffic. If I lived in a major city, I might feel the same, honestly.

    1. I loved walking down memory lane! It was such a fun trip. All I can think of when I see Draper James is that it's when I accidentally flashed y'all. 🤣 Isn't that a great song?!
