the Wednesday hodgepodge

Happy Wednesday, friends! I'm linking up with Joyce for the weekly hodgepodge; I'll jump right in!

1. What does adventure mean to you? To me, adventure is when I set out to go somewhere with someone, and I don't really know what to expect. The last year was a year of saying yes to things I normally wouldn't have, so I attended a music fest in the fall, I went to two Oktoberfests in one day, I went to a dancing class, I went to two plays at The Orpheum in December, and I've decided that I'm going to start attending more concerts. All of these things seem adventurous to me, because they're outside of my normal life. I love taking trips, and consider each of those an adventure on their own! Just the act of getting out of my house late at night on a night when I cannot sit here for one minute longer is adventurous for me. I realize this might seem strange to consider these types of things adventures, but my life is vastly different than it was just one short year ago. I went from being a homebody to never being able to stay at home for long, or at least not wanting to do that. I need all the plans!

This night out with my friend Lynda felt adventurous because we didn't get to the bar until after nine.

This drink felt fun and adventurous, because the bartender and I were being a little flirty with each other...and that is a whole new thing for me that I'm trying to embrace and not overthink.

Road trips are always adventurous to me!

Eating alone feels adventurous; I remember sitting in this booth on this day and enjoying my book while I had potato soup for lunch.

2. What are your thoughts on tipping? What businesses or service providers do you usually tip? Do you resent being asked if you'd like to add a tip? What about when a suggested amount is presented? I feel like I'm a generous tipper; I tip the wait staff at restaurants, my hair girl, my nail girl, and tattoo artists. I don't mind being asked if I'd like to add a tip, but I don't tip people who just stand there and take my order. I don't usually tip the suggested amount; sometimes it's below that, sometimes it's more than that.

3. I scream you scream, we all scream for ice cream...do we? Is ice cream a favorite treat at your house? What's your favorite flavor? Regular, soft serve, gelato, sherbet, or some non-dairy version of ice cream...what's your pleasure? I scream for homemade banana ice cream! That's my favorite. I will eat ice cream on occasion, but I'm not a huge fan of it all the time. I like regular, soft serve, gelato, sherbet, and frozen yogurt. I bought some while I was out with J on Saturday, just a pint of Haagen Daas, and it's still in his freezer. I wonder if he'll eat it; he loves ice cream, so it wouldn't surprise me if he runs out of his and moves to mine. 🤣 I only had a few spoons full of it while I was there the other night.

This was me eating my feelings with Baskin Robbins ice cream one night a couple weeks ago; my flavors of choice were chocolate fudge and strawberry. It was delicious!

4. What's your "Back in my day, we ________" story or saying?

Back in my day, we had to print out our instructions from Map Quest, and then keep up with every single page!

5. Somehow this is our last Hodgepodge in the month of June. Next week's Hodgepodge lands in July. Sum up your June using three adjectives.

June has been exciting! I've had lots of dates with J, and fun moments of doing new things together.

June has been delicious! I've eaten at Salad Station several times.

June has been a little rocky at times, full of ups and downs. I've had to go through some more firsts this month, and yesterday just about took me down for some reason. I cried off and on all day, and specifically three times at work. I can't really tell you why, except it's just the date of this week and the significance it holds looking back to the last year. I can tell you one thing: I need to stay off FB memories and Timehop. Note to self!

6. Insert your own random thought here. I'm sharing an old song again because of the day I had yesterday. It's Sufficient For Today by Maverick City Music.

Sometimes I have to play this until I start to believe it for myself. I looked up the passage from 2 Corinthians 12 that I love, verses 9-10.

I decided to write them out and carry them with me for the time being.

Thanks for reading my blog today, friends. Love to all!

Jenn ❤️

  1. I feel the same way about adventure! To me, it doesn't need to be a grandiose destination or outing to be considered an adventure. Regarding Mapquest- I think I mentioned that, too- I remember thinking how lucky we were to have directions PRINTED OUT and how did people get anywhere without it?? I'm glad your month has been exciting with lots of good times with J and friends. Have a great day!

    1. Yes! I remember thinking the same thing; how funny that we both mentioned this. Thank you for that, friend!

  2. I hope J doesn't find out about your flirty with the bartender, or there might be trouble in Dodge. The crime and investigation TV series shows similar situations that end at the police station.

    1. We weren't a thing on that night; it was way back in March, which is why I had on a sweater in the picture above that.

  3. I agree with you on adventure at this stage! All of those count! Stepping outside your comfort zone is an adventure. You've had a really fun month! Emotions can be good. I wonder if your emotional day was also being proud of yourself and all you've accomplished? I wonder if you will feel cleansed today. You have so much good stuff ahead but that doesn't mean you won't have some hard stuff, too.

    1. I think these things count as adventure, too! Like Maria said, adventure doesn't have to mean grandiose. I have had a lot of fun this month; Marilyn and I were talking about this recently. It could have been partly that...but I did wake up feeling better- lighter, brighter, not weighed down. Having fun plans tonight helps! You are so right; good stuff is always mixed in with a little bad, and that's okay, as long as I don't wallow there for too long.

    1. So funny! I'm all about Waze right now. Thank you for that, friend! I woke up feeling so much better today...maybe the tears really are soul cleansing. I'm glad for this, too!

  5. Saying yes to something you wouldn't normally say yes to is an adventure.
I love the sound of the banana ice cream!
I remember books with maps in before being able to go online and print them out. I feel old. lol
Sorry you had a day of it yesterday. Sending love and hugs!

  6. There will be days. But you get through them and hoping today is bright. The FB memories can definitely catch us unaware. I think you can opt out or hide them if you need to do that. Glad you're making new memories, meeting new people, and doing new fun things. Have a great week!

    1. There will be days! But we get through them. Amen to that! I am definitely not looking for them for the unforeseeable future. It's too painful! Thank you for all of these sweet encouraging words, friend, and also for being our gracious host! Much love!

    1. I did have so many fun adventures in the last year! I didn't realize it until I started listing them out. I'm grateful for this, because so many of those things were a wonderful distraction. I wholeheartedly agree about two of the things you thanked the Lord for!

  8. Oh that mapquest one had me laughing! THOSE led to some adventures for sure! I tend to be an awful flirt and always have been... most of the time I don't even realize I'm doing it. Luckily my husband isn't the jealous type and knows I am completely clueless about it.

    1. Those days were the best! I remember laughing over all the fun times it led us to. Oh gosh...I kind of think I can tend to be the same way...and often times my friendliness is mistaken for flirtation.

  9. I love mapquest and printing the directions. I thought it was so cool. I still like having directions (rather than listening to a GPS) but often people cannot even give me directions. They don't know the names of roads, etc. Always surprising!

    1. That's funny! Some people like listening to the GPS, which is what I used to do, but I no longer need to do that. I get irritated when the voice messes up whatever I'm listening to! That is surprising...but I am terrible with directions.

  10. Oh how I remember Mapquest! I also think of adventure in small ways, as well as the big trips etc. Just getting out and about in town trying new things is a good adventure. Sorry to hear you had a rough day!
