Happy Thursday, friends! I'm glad you're here to talk about books! I didn't even join in to host in the last couple of months, because my reading life is leaving a lot to be desired. It's a season that is hanging on for dear life, that I am ready to ditch. I miss loving to read, but I think maybe my hobbies are changing, and I don't love to read anymore? I've tried different genres, too, so it's not just that. Any advice or tips for me?? I'd appreciate them! That being said, here's what I've read/listened to that I'm still currently working my way through.
I started listening to this one at work this week. I love Carley Fortune! This book is about a grandmother/granddaughter and their summer back in a magical place where Alice (the granddaughter) spent her summer as a 17 year old teenager. When Nan falls and breaks her hip and is a little sad and depressed, Alice comes up with a plan to go back to Barry's Bay. She imagines a peaceful summer, but it's disrupted by the hum of a familiar yellow boat driven by Charlie Florek, the young man who changed Alice's life as a young girl.
I'll stop there so I won't spoil it for you, but Carley has a way with words in her quintessential summery books! I'm listening to this one, but I'm wondering if I should be reading it with my eyes instead. because I feel like I'm missing some? This is me trying to find the balance here to see what works best for me right now. I might go to the library today and see if I can find a physical copy of something. I don't want to stop trying!
I'm not giving up on reading, though. I plan on going to the library this week to see if I can find some more books that will hold my interest, and I'm going to keep trying to read summer themed novels by all my favorite writers.
What did you read lately that you loved? Also, do you have any book recs for me? I'd love to hear from you! Thanks for reading my blog today, friends. Love to all!
I am so sorry you are struggling to read lately but as active as you like to be it may be that reading just isn't for you right now? Perhaps books about travel and adventure like Dear Bob and Sue or Wild or Eat, Pray, Love, etc.
ReplyDeleteI'm beginning to think that reading isn't for me right now! I may try to give it up for the time being...but I love summer books so much. Maybe I can look into other kinds of books...
DeleteHopefully you'll get your reading mojo back!
ReplyDeleteI hope so!
DeleteI think we all go through stages of doing more tv/less reading or just less of both. If my mind is racing I can't really read. I just think you aren't having the long stretches of time to get in to a book. Once you get about an hour into a good book, you think about it and can't wait to pick it up again. I don't like it when a book is predictable in the end and I'm like - just end already!
ReplyDeleteI am not sure if my theory is correct or not. Maybe try reading instead of listening to the Carley Fortune. Maybe you need to get back to a good old book book and turn pages? Could it be the screen?
This could be the case; I actually thought the same thing recently. I love summer books so much, though! It's a hard pill to swallow about it not being for me at the moment. Maybe a physical book would help me...I'm going to go to the library in the next day or two, just to try. It may be the screen that's doing it for me and it isn't working!
DeleteI thought I'd read a lot during Covid, but really it was the opposite. Sometimes when our brains are too full of real life stuff it's hard to concentrate. I'd maybe try audio in the car when you're out and about. That helped me get back in the reading groove. I think too we're so visual, so tech now that holding a book in our hands and just reading without any other distractions is a skill we have to regain. There are seasons of course, so I'd just keep trying from time to time.
ReplyDeleteThat makes sense! Thanks for the advice; I have noticed I'm better at listening when I'm in the car. I will definitely keep trying!
DeleteSounds like you're just not in a reading season right now. Hope your trip to the library helps you find something you enjoy. But if not? Maybe just enjoy experiencing life first-hand for now and return to reading later!
ReplyDeleteThat really could be the case! It's so foreign, though, the thought of not reading or trying to read all the books I want to read. In the meantime, I do plan on experiencing some life until my mojo comes back! Thanks for stopping by today!
DeleteThis sounds like the perfect beach read- thanks for sharing!
ReplyDeleteYou're welcome! I'm sure you'll enjoy the book!
DeleteI think it's just fine if you decide that reading is not your favorite hobby these days. We all go through phases, and the books will be there when you feel like coming back to them. <3
ReplyDeleteThis is so true! I need to keep reminding myself of this. I not only used to love reading, but I still love the thought of reading and taking pride in being a bookworm. Not anymore, though!
DeleteFun fact -our daughter and a friend went to a book signing in Waco with Katherine Center! I did just finish Nancy Thayer’s latest, Summer Light, and always enjoy a virtual trip to Nantucket.
ReplyDeleteThat's so cool! I would love to meet her, especially since some of her books have turned into my favorite movies (Happiness For Beginners, The Lost Husband). I always enjoy that same kind of virtual trip!
