the Wednesday hodgepodge

Happy Wednesday, friends! I'm linking up with Joyce again for today's Hodgepodge. I'll jump right into this fun post!

1. It's National Golf month...do you play? Do you enjoy following golf? Have you ever been to a professional tournament? Does miniature golf count? I love playing that! I used to be really good at it, both as a young girl and also as an adult. I don't follow golf, and I've never been to a tournament, but this past weekend we had a huge golf tournament here in Memphis. There were lots of big names here playing, and my son Graham and several friends that I know went to be spectators. Pretty cool, right?

The top picture was when we played mini golf several years ago with their grandparents; Graham loves to go to this driving range today! The one right above this paragraph was when we vacationed in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. Sometimes I don't mind reliving memories, and sometimes it's painful. This one stings a little, if I'm being honest.

2. Astronaut Jim Lovell from Apollo 13 fame passed away last Thursday. Are you interested in outer space and what's happening today in terms of space exploration? If space travel became common in your lifetime, would you go? How do you personally relate to the idea of exploring something vast and mysterious? Does the idea excite you, intimidate you, or something else?

I didn't realize he had passed away last week; I'm not really into the whole space exploration thing, both what is going on today and what could come in the future. I honestly wouldn't want to travel to space, because I don't even love flying in an airplane. I can't imagine how much more I'd hate being in something like a space shuttle. When I think about how vast this world is, both the one we walk on and the vastness of the sky and beyond, I'm amazed by God. He created all of this by speaking it into being. I often think of verses that talk about how He holds all things together in His hands; I find comfort in that, because if He can do that, how much more can He handle anything in my life that I have going that stresses me out? It's all about perspective.

Speaking of space...check out that Sturgeon moon from Saturday night! It was brilliant.

3. Describe your communication style in three words. I have learned a lot in the world of dating! I've definitely learned how to communicate exactly what it is that I'm looking for or not looking for as far as this goes...but this also carries over well into my everyday life at home, at work, and when I'm on the phone or texting. I would say that I communicate in a way that is clear, kind, and to the point

4. Do you have a favorite cookbook? A famous celebrity chef? Do you watch cooking shows on TV? I don't have a favorite cookbook, per se, but I love Ree Drummond and Ina Garten. I loved watching cooking shows on TV when I was married and in the throes of raising my sons; I always needed inspiration in the ways of cooking dinner, and I would always be inspired by these two women.

5. As a child, did you have any back to school traditions? If so, did you carry those traditions on with your own children? Do you have any back to school traditions you've started on your own? I don't remember back to school traditions, so to speak, but I do remember shopping for the first day of school and getting excited over buying new school supplies. Some things never change! When my boys were little, I let them choose their own dinner for the first night back at school. They usually wanted something simple, like pigs in blankets and a good dessert.

6. Insert your own thought here.

I was home last night and in writing this post, I came across this song below. I love this version of the song I Know a Name by Elevation Worship and featuring CeCe Winans.

I'm excited to read your answers to this week's prompts! Thanks, Joyce, for such an amazing blog party each week. We appreciate you! Thanks for reading today, friends. Love to all!

  1. Jenn, I agree that you have a great communication style. You are kind, but to the point. I would say my style is blunt and opinionated, but I've learned how to temper that with love and a calmer demeanor, as I've aged. As far as outer space...hard NO! Sometimes the space exploration reminds me of the Tower of Babel and people just constantly trying to get to places they don't need to be. I mean, really...what's the end game with all of that? I used to love back-to-school, with shopping for new school supplies (noticed I didn't say clothes! :) I was all about the pens and paper, notebooks and gadgets. Still am :) Have a great day at work! I'll be heading to work tomorrow.

    1. Thank you for that! I'm definitely getting better as I get older, and I've learned some things in the last year from my life: if I think it, I need to speak it out loud. No more keeping quiet just to keep the peace for me! I agree about the space thing; I know some people are so into it, and I respect that, but it's not for me. We have so much in common!

  2. I agree that space reminds me of God's infinite ability to create. It's awe inspiring! I don't have a huge desire to go to space but how amazing would it be to see Earth?? Like not being on Earth, rather casually traveling beyond it. Mini golf is fun but I'm terrible at it :). Have a great day!

    1. Now that is something I would love to see! I can't imagine how I would feel seeing that; I'm often overwhelmed by God's love when I gaze at the ocean and its vastness. Thank you, friend! Happy Wednesday!

  3. Ree Drummond and Ina Garten are two of my faves too :)

  4. Good point about space! It's so vast! It's beyond our understanding!
That is so interesting that dating communication is spilling into other areas of your life. You have found your voice I think. There is a certain degree of compromise in a marriage and we have to pick our battles. We learn each others' triggers. So, I think you are getting your voice back, maybe.

    1. It is beyond our understanding! I will agree with your assessment about me finding my voice again. It had been lost for years because of putting myself last; it feels good to put myself first right now. It feels foreign, but I love who I am right this moment! Life feels good. Thank you for always cheering me on, my friend. xoxo

  5. CeCe Winans is one of my favorites. What a gift she has! I understand how photos can stir up some tough emotions. I love mini golf too. We have a really pretty one near us that was made to look more like a lush tropical garden than what you typically see in putt putt places. Have a great day!

    1. I have loved CeCe since I was a teenager! Music is so powerful, and her voice has always been mesmerizing. She just gets better and more beautiful with age! Ugh to the pictures; sometimes I'm fine, and other times memories make me cry. This one got me, for some reason! I try to play it tough so much, but I'm not really...I just have this protective shield around my heart that I keep in place. Every once in a while I let it down, and this happens. It's okay, though...it usually passes quickly. I don't know why I'm saying all of this right now, but I feel like I need it to be said. Thank you for being kind and encouraging to me! On a lighter note...that mini golf course sounds beautiful! I love playing that and should make plans to go soon. I'd love to do this with my sons! Happy Wednesday, sweet friend.

  6. James Lovell is an icon in the world of ufology, during the Gemini missions he famously transmitted to NASA "we have a bogey at 10 o'clock...actual sightings" and he remarked they could see the rocket thrusters of the UFO's. If you want a mind blowing read, check out the arrival of alleged space probe Oumuamua which passed by earth several years ago...along with physicist's Hawking's and Kaku's warnings about first contact.

  7. I am not a big fan of golf, the only one I've played is miniature golf which was a lot of fun.
The thought of being in space scares me. I've seen too many movies about people being stuck up there and that's not for me.
I used to love shopping for back to school supplies for myself and then for my girls, I really miss it now.

  8. I even struggle with mini golf; though I do enjoy playing it I'm just not good at it. I used to watch a lot of cooking shows before I had kids but I never watched The Pioneer Woman. I vaguely remember watching Giada in Everyday Italian, Paula Dean (though I never, ever tried to cook like her-- waay too much butter for me! LOL), and maybe Rachel Ray a time or two?

  9. I enjoy mini golf too, and love Ree and Ina. There is a new Pioneer Woman cookbook coming in October that is back to basics. I'm looking forward to it. Love the song/video at the end. Did I tell you we're going to see Cece in Dec for a Christmas show? Hope you have a good day!

  10. Your answer to the second question was so eloquent. I share the same thoughts. The universe sings of God’s glory. I am so in awe of His creation.
