Happy Tuesday, friends! I'm here to talk about some things I've worn recently, and about the family dinner night that I reinstated this summer. I'm linking up with Amy for the weekly Fashion Files and Joanne for Tuesday Talk for this post. I'll jump right in!
First up is all about the outfits I wore last week...
I wanted to look cute at work last week; I also wanted to be comfortable and cool as I worked in rooms getting my friends ready to teach for the school year. Because of that, I lived in gauze and tee shirt dresses all week, and I loved being all of those things I wanted to be. I wore a mixture of sandals and sneakers; this last picture of us is from Saturday night. I'd bought a dress to wear to a wedding this weekend, but I had a last minute outfit chance once Jonah took a picture of us outside and I saw what the dress looked like. Inside the house, it was fine; outside, it turned sheer, and I didn't love that. I went back inside at the last minute and threw this one on instead.
Do you have thoughts on any of the outfits? I'd love to hear them!
And now onto family dinner...
Most of you know that four weeks ago, I reinstated family dinner night. This takes place each week on Sunday afternoon at five; I go to church, then I come home to prepare for my sons and Mallory (plus any extras) to come eat dinner. I never take pictures of this during the main event, which is great because I'm living in the moment instead of being on my phone. This week I decided to try to take some pictures.
This was such a fun afternoon; I got there at two and stayed until six. The pool felt amazing! This week was back at my house for week four; I made French dip sandwiches, homemade macaroni and cheese (in the crock pot), and for dessert we had cookies with ice cream. Like I said before, I keep things as simple as possible, so I make the things they love that are easy. I also use paper products when I have them on hand.
I forgot to buy some this week, so I used these Christmas since I had them on hand. I loved this! It was like a Christmas in August party. I always have two liters of soft drinks for them, and bottles of water. Sometimes they bring their own alcoholic drinks, and sometimes I have some on hand already. The goal isn't perfection or a Pinterest worthy night; the goal is to be together, to laugh, and to have fun while we connect. They can't make it each week, and I don't expect that, but each week I provide a meal for them all. When it doesn't work out for my sons to be here, I invite Mom, Bill, Trish, Devin, and Tyler (the last two are my nephews). One week we'll invite Chris' dad and his girlfriend; another night I might decide to invite some friends. Next week our plan is to grill hamburgers and we'll swim in my neighbor's pool since I'll be watching their dogs for the weekend. I made sure to tell them all this last night while they were here.

I love your family dinner night! But I also love that you don't expect them all to show up every week. One of my best friends from high school married her husband and later realized that they were expected to plan every weekend around his family's Sunday night dinner and really the only acceptable "excuse" for missing was illness. Most of the time she was fine with that but I know other times it really bothered her. I think it's key to be flexible with our grown adults and make it more of a welcoming thing than a mandatory/guilt thing.
ReplyDeleteI love it too! I would love for them all to come each week, but I know I have to be realistic. I don't want to set goals to be disappointed with, so I'm okay with it looking different each week. I love to entertain, though...and this is a great way for me to go about that, hence me changing it up on occasion. I really love the thought of hosting friends, too. I almost invited my best friend and her husband this weekend, but I'm glad I didn't, because I wouldn't have had enough food. Ha!
DeleteLove that you had a week of dresses for work! I love the alternate wedding outfit but I am sorry about the sheerness of the original dress. This is why outfit photos can be helpful!
ReplyDeleteI love the family dinner, and I love that you are flexible - going to the kids' pool - and keeping it simple. I think it has more longevity if you keep it simple. Being open to different groupings is nice, too. It's a really nice ritual to close out your weekends and this would be great leftovers for an easy Monday lunch. I would love to start this, too.
I would suggest starting a list of ideas in your notes app on your phone as things come to you. I think your idea of pool next weekend is wonderful!
Thanks! I still love all the dresses. You are so right about outfit photos! I hate that the dress didn't work out. I love the family dinner each week, no matter what it looks like! I agree about the simplicity of things; I don't want them to feel like this is something they HAVE to do, but hopefully it's something they want to do each week, or as often as possible at least. You should see the notes app on my phone! It's chock full and I started the family dinner night one the first week I started having them over. I'm excited about the pool next week!
DeleteYup that last pic is definitely a fave of mine too :) LOVE this tradition Jen- you will treasure all of that time together and keeping the meals simple is genius! Your dresses last week are all so cute and comfy at the same time too!
ReplyDeleteThe T-shirt dresses are great for summer, especially the striped one...reminds me of the shirt Dennis the Menace wore in that great TV series from the early sixties.
ReplyDeleteSince my kids are all home and my oldest does come home on the weekend during the school year, we don't really have to do this yet (and my parents live with us), but I would like to do something like this at least once or twice a month when they are older and move out. Memories made and time spent together in a non stressful way.
ReplyDeleteFlowy and gauze dress are a favorite of mine too this summer!

Your dresses are so cute and I do like the one from Saturday night, it really suits you.
ReplyDeleteThe family dinners sound wonderful, especially spending time in the pool and pizza! Fun photos! Good idea using paper plates and napkins, the Christmas ones did make me chuckle but why not!
That is a gorgeous photo of you and your boys!
Your family dinner night is such a great idea, and how awesome that you keep it simple and low key. What a blessing for both you and the boys too. Love that last photo!!
ReplyDeleteI LOVE family dinner!!! My parents lived very far away from me for the first 10 or so years that I was married, and then they recently moved close by. My Mom has everyone over on Sunday after church, kind of similar to how you do it! It always takes time, but my kids love it and cherish the memories and I'm so glad that we have the opportunity to do it!
ReplyDeleteWe return the favor and have them over on Tuesday nights!
