Happy Wednesday, friends! I'm here with Joyce again today for the weekly hodgepodge...this is a post that I dearly love; thank you, Joyce, for your inspiring and thought provoking questions each and every week! I'll jump right in.
1. What's worth standing in line for? You know what was worth it this week to stand in a long line for? A new car title and license plate in my own new name! My son advised me to be there thirty minutes before they opened to get a good spot in the line, so I showed up at 7:30 like he recommended. The only problem was that the office didn't actually open until nine. Oopsies! I was prepared, though. I sat on the steps until I got hot, then I moved over to stand in the shade. I read my new library book while I waited, but for the last fifteen minutes I talked to the man and woman who were over there in the shade with me. I love making friends wherever I go! Also, and I'm just going to say it here like I want to say it, since there's no better way: I felt like a badass after I did this. Add this to the list of new things I'm having to learn to do for myself! I love checking things off one at a time like this, and the fact that my car is now officially my car, well...I can't quite express what this means to me.
This is my old plate, which is why it's pictured...but on Snapchat I sent this to my sons and said, "Out with the old and in with the new...". My old one was an E tag since he was in local government, and it bugged the daylights out of me being associated with that still. I need new and mine in my life.
2. Tell us about a favorite food related memory. On a lighter note...I think a lot of my favorite memories are tied up with food. When I was young, we always ate dinner at an actual table, and Mom cooked every single night. We rarely ate out! When my sons were young, we always ate at the dinner table; we would talk about our days, we would laugh, we would sometimes have serious discussions, like when they would experience the death of a friend's parent or a close neighbor friend. To this day, food is important to me, not because I love to eat it, but because it's what I use to nurture someone. I want to make sure people eat well, so I'll sometimes offer to take dinner with me to a friend's house, or I'll inwardly rejoice when someone (a man) asks me to wait on him for dinner. I love to eat with people!
3. What are some things you find particularly peaceful or calming? Music, music, MUSIC! These days it's my favorite thing to do when I get home from work. I don't want "talking" on in the background, but music? Yes, please! All day long. I have mentioned this no less than a thousand times here before, but I have different playlists on Spotify for different seasons/times of day. In the afternoon, I am ready for my favorite playlist that I made; it's a combo of country and pop music.
4. Is there something you do now that gets you just as excited as it did when you were a child? Yes! Travel gets me just as excited today as it always has. I love it all from start to finish, but I don't love the planning phase. I would prefer to let someone else do that; I just like to make the packing lists, pack, and people watch at the airport. I can never sleep the night before I travel! My next trip is coming up in a couple weeks; I'm going back to Dallas to see my Noah. I can't wait! After that one is a fall break trip, then I'll be home again until spring break. Stay tuned!
5. To what degree are you in touch with friends from grade school? High school? College, if you attended college? I'm not really in touch with friends from those grade levels in school, but my childhood best friend and I are still in touch, though not as often as we'd both like. We've talked about meeting up for a weekend getaway; I want to make this happen sometime in the next year! She's finally an empty nester, and I'm free as a bird, so now's the perfect time. She lives in Oklahoma now, so maybe we would meet somewhere halfway? I love that my sons have met Stacy; she came in town about fifteen years ago and we all met up at Dad's house for a cookout. It felt surreal to have our kids meet!
6. Insert your own random thought here. I took a half day off from work yesterday to get the license plate and car title issue dealt with; it felt amazing! I celebrated myself afterward by treating myself to breakfast at my favorite place, Eggs Up Grill.
I had my book with me and enjoyed reading while I ate. This felt great! I don't usually eat at a sit down restaurant alone, so this felt empowering. I want to do this more, moving forward! I have some strong women in my life who are inspirational to me in this; I am making it a goal to be more like them. After breakfast I came home to do some laundry and cleaning, then I put the new license plate on my car, and worked on some blog stuff for the week before I went in at 12:40. I figured since I took a half day, I would enjoy a half day.
That night I had Bunco, so it felt good (luxurious) to be home midday for mundane things. I maybe took that for granted before? I won't again, I assure you. I love my job, but I do miss doing things in the week. It's okay, though! I always have time at the end of my day, and I'm learning to be more careful and selective in what I say "yes" to. On Monday, for instance, I paid my water bill after work, then got a proof of residence printed off, and went to the library before coming home for the evening. It feels good to be figuring out my new life yet again; change isn't something I love, but I've had so much of it in fourteen months that it's starting to feel like my new normal. I'm learning that I'm strong, capable, and that I easily adapt to situations outside of my control. That feels pretty good, friends.
Thanks for reading my blog today! I can't wait to read your answers if you're joining in with sweet Joyce for this link party. I'll see you back here Friday! Love to all.
Jenn
Yay for the new car tag! I love me some Eggs Up Grill! I'm glad you had a half day and maybe you can have a few more of those throughout the school year. I will be glad to do the planning of any trip! Hope it is a good Wednesday for you friend!
ReplyDeleteI know! It is such a small thing that felt so big; this is something the average person wouldn't understand. Thank you for celebrating that with me! I will take a half day every so often; I have a certain amount of time off during the year that I'll still get paid for, so I want to use those days. I'll always let you do the planning, friend! Thank you! I hope the same for you!
DeleteWhat an empowering day! You are doing all these things for yourself and making your life your own! This is so important! I notice more and more people eating alone in restaurants and I don't think it looks sad, but strong.
ReplyDeleteIt was! It felt amazing. Thank you for cheering me on! I think it's important, too. I've noticed that as well! I ended up sitting at the bar since it was open and there was no wait. I will do that again the next time I eat alone! I love eating at bars. Have a great day, friend! xoxo
DeleteGood for you getting the car tag sorted. Dealing with the DMV can be a lot and now the task is behind you. I love Eggs Up Grill too. Really breakfast out somewhere is my favorite. Even if I'm with hubs I love to eat at the bar. It seems more common now to see people eating alone so I don't think too much about it. Hope you have a great day!
ReplyDeleteThank you! I don't know that I realized that Eggs Up was a chain. It's so delicious! I love breakfast out, since I never make it at home. I hope your week has been good, friend! Thanks for the fun link up, as always!
DeleteWhat a great post- I love your random thought. The GREAT thing about working at a school is that you will have a long winter break, spring break and think about next summer when you will be home for weeks on end! We don't have that breakfast chain here but we have lots of great breakfast spots. Your breakfast looks so good. I feel like I can easily make good tasting breakfast food but there's something about someone else preparing a good tasting meal every once in a while that can't be beat! I grew up like you did- my mom cooked just about every night. Don't know how she did it but she did!! I'm glad you made good use of your morning off work. Have a great day!
ReplyDeleteThank you! I know, that's what was so appealing to me about going to work in a school again. You cannot break all the paid vacation time and long breaks every so often. This is such a huge perk! I agree about eating out, especially breakfast, at least for me. I never make it at home, so it's always a treat. I hope you had a great day!
DeleteCongrats on the new car title and license plate in your new name. How exciting. It sounds like a lovely morning even if you were there a little early, the breakfast looks so good!
ReplyDeleteFamily meals are the best!
I love the idea of travel and planning it but the actual travelling stresses me out.
Thank you! It felt so great to get that task checked off my list. I agree about family meals! They are simply the best.
DeleteI love a great breakfast place!! We don't have that many and the actual good ones are not too close. If there was one, I would probably eat breakfast out way too often. We always ate our meals at the table. I thought everyone did. I've since learned that is not exactly the case. We, as in just the two of us, still eat our meals together at the table. But, yes, I have great memories of family meals:)
ReplyDeleteMe too! I love that you two still eat your meals at the table. I did that as well with my ex even when my sons weren't home. I don't eat at the table much anymore these days. It doesn't feel right. But yay for sweet memories of family dinner times!
DeleteGood for you, getting that done with your car! I sat in the dmv for hours a few weeks ago to renew my license, and yes I stood in line outside before even coming in. Tasks like that are usually daunting.. I'm glad I'm old and don't have to do it as often anymore haha!
ReplyDeleteThe breakfast looks yummy! And I'm glad you had dinners at the table, that is some of my favorite times with my family, I love it so much! I'm so thankful for the time to catch up, even if we are home together all the time its the time we sit down and just enjoy one another's company and that means a lot to me!
I hope you have an exciting week!!!
Thank you! That's always the worst, but it feels good to have that checked off my list. It was so good! I love breakfast out. I hope you've had a great week as well, my friend!
DeleteI use food to nurture too :) It helps to show love for sure. Bunco sounds so fun- hope you write about it!
ReplyDeleteYes! I agree wholeheartedly. I will share about that someday! I can't believe I haven't already talked about it here before.
DeleteHey Jenn!! I'm so glad you found me!! I recognize you from Marilyn's pictures on her blog. Y'all always have so much fun together!! I agree with you 1000% about music. Live music is my most favorite thing in the entire world! I'm adding you to my reading list now and I'm looking forward to following along with you!
ReplyDeleteHello! We do always have such a great time together; I'm so grateful that God allowed us to walk through the same things in life at exactly the same time. I love that we have music in common! I look forward to following along with you as well!
DeleteWe no longer have lines at our DMV! I am loving it because they actually keep pretty close to appointment times now so I don't have to worry about spending all day waiting around for things like license renewal or plates. But yay you for getting that done! Travel is a good one; that always gets me excited! Maybe too excited as I can never sleep the night before we travel either and while part of it is nerves (particularly when flying/dealing with the whole airport hassle) I always tell myself it's excitement because that re-framing it really does help me remember that ultimately I'm going to have fun.
ReplyDeleteThat's amazing! What a great concept; I wish we had the same thing here. I am the exact same way when it comes to travel. I love that we share that!
DeleteI'm glad you took time off to take care of the car registration. Travel definitely gets me excited too.
ReplyDeleteThank you! I'm glad it's behind me. Yes! I love that!
