the Wednesday hodgepodge

Happy Wednesday, friends! I'm here with Joyce again today for the weekly hodgepodge...this is a post that I dearly love; thank you, Joyce, for your inspiring and thought provoking questions each and every week! I'll jump right in.

1. When someone finds out what you do or where you're from, what's a question they always ask? When I'm traveling and they learn where I'm from, they ask me to talk again. I never do, but usually just smile and walk away, because that always feels a little insulting. When people learn I'm from near Memphis, they want to know if I like Elvis or if I've ever been to Graceland. The answer to both of those questions is no. Marilyn, I hope we can still be friends.

2. Did you participate in Greek life when you were in college, or have children who did? If so, what was your experience like? Taking another tack...have you ever been to Greece? If not, is that a destination on your bucket list? I don't talk about my college experience here much since I never finished, but I did briefly attend a small college called Lambuth; now it's another campus of the University of Memphis, in Jackson, Tennessee. I did rush (pledge?) A O Pi. I loved my time spent with my sorority sisters; I'm still friends with a couple of them today, but we haven't seen each other in years. These girls were also my suitemates while I was at Lambuth.

I wish I had pictures to share, but I don't.

As for the second part of this question, I've never been to Greece, but would love to visit someday. I especially love the look of the town of Santorini, but I'm sure it's way too touristy for my taste. It's fun to dream, though!

3. Do you like Greek food? If so, what's your favorite dish? I love Greek food! My favorite is anything that I can put Tzatziki on; I also love a good Greek salad and Moussaka. I've had Baklava as well, and I love it as a dessert. Side note, my stepmom had friends who were Greek, and that's where I had the homemade Baklava and Moussaka; we would get invited over to their house during the summer, and the food was always amazing.

4. What incredibly common thing have you never done? I have to confess that I consulted AI on my browser to ask what some common activities were among people. Daydreaming popped up, and I am picking that one to expound on. I do feel like I know a lot of people who daydream, and that's something I've never done, even as a young girl. I've always been a realistic person, and I am still that way today. This can be both good and bad!

5. What is a telltale sign that you're upset? I get quiet. I don't make phone calls, I don't talk a lot, I just want to be left alone. I have to work my way through things, you know? I crave the quiet sometimes, too, even on the days when I'm not upset. I feel like this as I eat lunch everyday. I'm not very social, because the women who eat with us in our room talk about their work schedules/meetings/students. I don't have anything to contribute to the conversation lately, so I just sit there quietly and scroll or text on my phone.

6. Insert your own random thought here. I have a current favorite song! It's Tin Roof by Blessing Offor, and featuring Chris Tomlin. You should give this a listen!

I can't read to read your answers to these prompts! Thanks for being here to read my blog today, friends. Love to all!

  1. Wow! So fun that you were in a sorority! That is one of my regrets- I think I would've loved that life. I get quiet too when I am upset

    1. It was fun; I don't remember a lot of details, but I know I loved the nights when we would have our house meetings. It was always fun getting to know new people, and I remember telling them that I'd gotten engaged one weekend, and all of them flipping out and screaming. I also remember us wearing matching things a lot...a lot of white and denim. It's funny how that just came to me like that...I haven't thought of this in a long time!

  2. My mom was an AO Pi (not sure how you did the symbol - lol) at University of Evansville, IN. I bet you do get that Memphis question a lot - lol. I hope you're having a good week and sorry that the lunch gals talk shop too much.

    1. That's neat! There was another sorority, but I can't remember the name of it; I attended a small college as well. It's been a good week, but my nerves were shot by 12:30 yesterday with 4th and 5th grades. They're a lot! 🤣 About lunch, I may go eat outside today with my friend Sarah who is new this year. We discussed this yesterday!

  3. When you say people ask you to say something do you mean they want to hear if you have an accent? To the extent you may be referring to accents, I love a good southern accent and found it interesting that when meeting you and Marilyn- I couldn't detect much if any of an accent in you but I think Marilyn speaks with a noticeable southern accent. I have a friend who's Greek and I love it when she makes Greek food! Have a great day!

    1. Yes! I should have said that. I will take that as a compliment! I don't love a Southern accent and I actually work to try to not sound like I live where I live. I bet you do love when your friend makes food for you! Homemade is the best. Thanks, friend! I hope the same for you!

  4. When I moved south from the north I was often asked to say particular words or phrases. I hope lunch works out for you. I'd think you'd want a break from the chatter of the classroom. I've never been to Graceland either but I don't live nearby. You should go with Marilyn sometime : ) Have a great day!

    1. That's funny. Thanks for that! A friend and I talked about going outside to a pavilion to eat lunch today; I hope we're able to make that happen. I think we will with the cooler weather. I need to do that with her as my own personal tour guide! Thanks, friend, I hope you do the same!
