the Wednesday hodgepodge

Happy Wednesday, friends! I'm linking up with Joyce for today's hodgepodge post. I'll jump right in!

1. August 19th is National Aviation Day...do you like to fly? When was the last time you were on an airplane? The date is chosen in honor of the history and development of aviation, and celebrated on the birthday of Orville Wright. Have you ever been to the Kitty Hawk area of North Carolina or the city of Dayton, Ohio (their birthplace)? I don't enjoy flying; I prefer for my travel to be on the ground, just because I'm scared of heights. The last time I flew was this past March, when I visited my family in Colorado. I've never been to either city.

2. In what area of your life do you tend to "wing it"? I tend to wing it in the area of food or dinner. I don't often know what I'm going to make for dinner from week to week, at least not on my own. I was better about that with Chris, but now...

3. A favorite book, song, or movie that relates to flight in some way? Without a doubt, Topgun was the first thing that came to mind. I'm still obsessed with both movies!

4. Soft serve, gelato, sherbet, frozen yogurt, or good old fashioned ice cream...what's your pleasure? Your favorite flavor? How often do you indulge? I really love frozen yogurt and prefer that over any of these other types of dessert. My favorite thing to do at the local yogurt place is to mix salted caramel with dark chocolate. It's delicious! It's been a while since I've had any...maybe I need to make that happen this week.

I can't talk about froyo without thinking of getting that with Marilyn at the beach last summer; I was cracking up over all her containers of the sweet stuff!

5. I never get tired of reading blogs and writing blog posts.

6. Insert your own random thought here. I noticed that I haven't been taking pictures like I normally do; I can't seem to gather up the care enough to do things. I realize that sounds alarming, but I've never experienced the grief that I'm experiencing right now. It's unlike anything else I've ever been through, and honestly, it's the worst thing I've gone through to date. I don't wish it on anyone. I just thought divorce was bad, and it was, but this is so much worse. I know that sounds strange, but it's the truth.

I hate to end on that kind of a note, but it's kind of where I am right now. I know you'll understand this, and I appreciate the kindness you keep showing me. Thanks for reading today, friends. I hope to return to my cheerful self sometime soon. I hope I don't run you off. Ha! I'll see you back here tomorrow. Love to all!

  1. Thank you for that! I know people will understand why I'm different for now. I don't expect to be this way forever, and truthfully I feel different today than I did on Monday night when I wrote this post. Yesterday was a much better day for me... each day really does get a little better.

I know I'm not the only one who loves reading/writing blog posts! I get behind and then I will usually catch up on the weekends.

  2. You're in survival mode right now and normal things don't feel normal. Go get you some froyo this week. If you have the energy, that is. You are so tan in the froyo pic in the green dress.
I like how you answered number 5. I also should have said reading and writing blogs. Aren't we lucky to have this hobby?

  3. Grief is complicated and everyone experiences things differently. Do what works for you right now and I think people reading your blog understand you're in a hard place right now. It's good to talk about it if talking helps ease your pain. I still really enjoy blogging and reading what others have to say. I hope you go get that yogurt this week. Sending you a big hug.

  4. We don't really have many/any frozen yogurt places around that I know of.. I don't think I've had frozen yogurt (not from a grocery store) since I was a kid and TCBY was around. But even then I only went once or maybe twice because we didn't have any super close to us. I was surprised at how much grief seemed to effect everything; I had zero appetite, couldn't sleep but felt so tired, couldn't focus and yet had a million thoughts running through my head all day long, couldn't read, didn't want to do much of anything at the start. It's all getting better now but it's not at all surprising that you can't muster up the energy/care to take photos. That just isn't important to you right now.

  5. I am always up for yogurt with you! Double fisting it with yogurt at the beach was so fun! I also agree to winging it about dinner. I rarely have a plan. You have 2 more flights this year so I hope those go smoothly. You are a frequent flyer in my book, so that is good you can still do that. Fall will bring some photo opportunities maybe and if not, that is okay too. My camera roll hasn't been too busy since my trip.

  6. Yes, I feel the same about flying, I prefer my feet on the ground. I've never been on a plane.
I am pretty good with the meal planning but most weeks I do end up swapping things around.
I never even thought about Top Gun, it's so obvious and such a good movie!
I don't think I have ever had frozen yogurt, the way you have it sounds so yummy!
Sending love and hugs. Thinking of you.

  7. I picked Top Gun too although I haven't seen the second one. I completely understand that the regular activities of life have no appeal right now. Give yourself a lot of grace and time. And maybe some ice cream for supper. Sending lots of love.

  8. You are simply an amazing person so take ALL the time you need to let your heart heal a bit. I’ve been reading your blog for a few years but this is the first time I’ve commented. Keep moving forward, putting one foot in front of the other- any step forward is a good one. Sending you prayers, a peaceful mind and positivity

  10. Give yourself Grace. No one knows the road you walk, even if they have experienced something similar. All journeys are our own. Take time for yourself and get the frozen yogurt. Rita

  11. I can understand how this is so much worse, even than divorce. Hang in there!

  12. I am so glad to see you posting because I know it helps you, but I also know that no one expects you to do or be all things to all people. Grief is a tough, tough journey and I'm so, so sorry that you are walking it.

  14. Enjoyed your answers. Weirdly I'm afraid of heights but will go on a large jet, but don't try to talk me into a super small plane or helicopter. I so wish I had more time to read blog posts especially the bloggers I follow through the link parties. I know I'd enjoy their other posts. I'm so sorry for all you're going through. I know we can never truly understand unless we've gone through it. Sending you hugs.

  15. I'm afraid of heights but not afraid of flying, oddly enough.
I love your answer to #5 - I don't get tired of blogging and reading blogs either, the problem is that I don't seem to have the time to do as much of that as I'd like (thus why it takes me several days at least to get around to visiting other Hodgepodge posts - eeks!)
I've been praying comfort and peace for you, and that you give yourself room and grace to grieve in the way that feels right for you. I'm sure everyone understands that your world has shifted and it will take time to heal and find your way through it. I'm so sorry for your loss and pain, and I hope you're really feeling God holding you close.

things I'm making room for

Happy Saturday, friends! Today I'm thinking about the things I want to make room for in my life and how easily the days are filling up...
