the Wednesday hodgepodge

Happy hodgepodge Wednesday, friends! I'm linking up with Joyce today for this fun weekly blog post. I'll jump right in!

1. What do birthdays look like in your house? How are they celebrated? Any special traditions? What about birthdays growing up? Birthdays in my house look like us gathering for dinner together around the table, with bonus friends here with us, laughing our heads off and reminiscing. I love making them feel special and loved, especially after the last year we've all had. I always tell them "happy last night of being ___" the night before their birthdays, and I always call them early in the mornings on their special days. When I was growing up, Mom and Dad were the best at birthdays. I remember having sleepovers and doing things with my friends every year. At some point, Dad started a tradition of taking me for my favorite Japanese food each year on my birthday; we most recently did this three years ago. These days, my favorite way to spend my birthday is with Mom. I have to be with her every year on my actual birthday!

This was us on my birthday in 2023. I didn't expect to see her that day, since I worked that year on my birthday; she and Trish stopped by with a cupcake for me, and I almost cried. I say it all the time and mean it: life is all about the small things.

2. Someone is sending you a dozen roses...what color are you hoping for? Are you someone who gets accused of seeing the world through rose-colored glasses? Is your accuser correct? Elaborate. If I were to get roses, I'd probably want the ones that look kind of coral in their color...but between us, I don't really like roses. I have been accused of seeing the world through rose-colored glasses, and I take it as a compliment. I am definitely a positive minded person, and I don't think it's a bad thing to be this way! I feel like when people say that kind of thing, that it's mean spirited. I don't have any room for that in my life!

3. June 4th is National Cheese Day...will you celebrate? What's something (besides a burger) you make in the summer months that calls for cheese? I won't celebrate this holiday, because I can leave or take cheese. I don't necessarily make this in the summer months, but my sons love it when I make Shay's beer cheddar Joe's (like sloppy Joe's, but with beer and cheddar). They're delicious! Maybe I need to make that again soon.

4. 'Tis the season...any weddings on your June calendar? What's the first word that comes to mind when I say the word "marriage"? I don't have any weddings on my June calendar, but I have one coming up in October. Since it's my nephew's (by marriage) wedding, I probably won't attend, unless I get a wild hair and decide to go with a date. 🤣 I don't really think of anything when I hear that word, honestly, but it does remind me that I have yet to burn my wedding dress and still want to do that!

5. What are you most looking forward to this June? I'm most looking forward to the time I spend with the people I love to be with: my family and my friends. I'm looking forward to new memories, time spent in the water, hearing live music, and doing all the fun things that are involved with this wonderful time of year.

6. Insert your own random thought here.

My random thought for today is that you should keep reading past this post to the next one...today's the Currently link party. I hope you'll join me for that! Thanks for reading my blog, friends. Love to all!

  2. Two posts in one day- I am impressed! I will have to do Currently another day :). I love how positive your outlook is. I feel like I know many people like that. I'm not so much and I always notice it in others, lol. That's neat that you make a point of recognizing your kids' last day of being a certain age. I know that I've said that to my kids but I don't think I made a point of doing it every year. I'm sure your boys feel loved and special on their birthdays :).

  5. I haven't made Sloppy Joes in years but I always liked them. Yours sound good. I'mg sorry about all the fallout divorce brings in terms of extended family and celebrating people you have loved. One of these days I'll get to your Currently link up. Maybe this one if I get myself together...I feel like June and September are busy busy for us. Have a great day Jenn!

  8. I won't be celebrating either as I am trying to avoid cheese... and did a lousy job on Monday. It left me feeling so sick though that I remembered why I try to avoid it!
