Happy Hodgepodge day, friends! I'm here again with Joyce today for her weekly hodgepodge. I'll jump right in!
1. June 10th is National Herbs & Spices Day. Besides salt and pepper, what herb or spice container do you reach for more often? Is there a spice you truly dislike? What's a recent dish you made that calls for something more than salt and pepper? I love the Everything Bagel spice blend, and when I have some on hand, I put it on literally everything just about. Additionally, I use garlic powder a lot. The only spice I dislike is curry, or maybe it's that I just like it in very small amounts. I made a Paula Deen dish one time called Chicken Divan, and it called for way too much curry powder! I never made it again, but I should have tried it with less of that. I didn't make this, but last week Jonah made homemade shrimp alfredo, and it called for garlic powder. I think the last thing I "made" was the Greek bowl from Amy; it called for Greek seasoning.
Here's another Hodgepodge post that I talked about this dish.
2. It's been said that "variety is the spice of life"...in what way is this true for you? Elaborate. I'm going to use this to talk about music again. All of you know that I'm in a season of not being able to read a lot or even watch TV/ movies; on the days when I'm home and this is the case, I have music playing. I have mentioned this here before, but in case anyone new is here reading, I'll elaborate again.
I listen to different music at differing times of days, or depending on my mood. I like to listen to worship/Christian music in the mornings while I'm up early and when I'm getting dressed. I do this at work, as well! In the afternoons, I like something like Meghan Trainor or Maroon Five or any of the thousand playlists I've created on Spotify. In the evenings, I like something a little more chill, so I may listen to Ben Rector or Old Dominion or some older music. Right now I'm listening to a lot of Treaty Oak Revival music since I'm seeing them in concert Saturday night with J and his sons. I'm really excited about going to see them with him, because they're his favorite band right now. We're going to see Old Dominion this month, too, at the end of June. Who am I??? I have3n't attended concerts in years, and all of a sudden, I can't get enough.
Here's my Spotify profile if you want to follow me there, but don't judge me by some of the songs/lyrics you'll see. I have happy, sad, angry, and chill playlists for all of the moods I might go through. I love the different varieties of music that I listen to on a daily basis! Because it's all I do consistently at the moment, this is something small that spices up my life.
3. What's something in your life that adds spice (excitement, intensity) even if it also comes with challenge or unpredictability? Right now, Stella is the something that adds extra spice to my life. I'm trying to like her more and have been focusing on not being mad at her when she acts like a puppy. The timing of her coming to live here wasn't the greatest, but she's making small improvements each day.
She cute.
4. If you could master one skill or hobby, what would it be and why? I wish I could play the piano! Maybe I should try to learn, since I have a piano. I'd love to be able to sit and play without giving it a thought. I would love to play music that I can worship to; I love just sitting and playing the songs I do know how to play from muscle memory of taking lessons for a year while I was young. I think I'd enjoy this because it would feel therapeutic.
5. We're halfway through the year (!!!)...what's one book, movie, or activity you've loved this year that you would recommend to others? I'll go with an activity here since 2025 isn't my year to read and watch things. I tried going back to look at my bookish posts this year, and the only one I could find before last week was in January, which means I've only written two posts for reading out of the six months we've seen thus far in 2025. I've loved several activities this year that I'd highly recommend: walking with a friend, walking outside, listening to music with people you care about, being with friends as often as possible, journaling everything, and watching endless reels and videos on TikTok. That's how I fall asleep most night, either by watching videos on my phone or by talking on the phone.
6. Insert your own random thought here. My random thought for this week is another song! This one is called Higher Than I, and it's by Sons of Sunday.
Thanks for being here to read my blog today, friends! Do you have anything fun planned today? I am working today and then I have plans later in the day. I'd love to hear from you! I'll see you back here tomorrow. Love to all!
P.S. I will now be deleting any snarky anonymous comments, so if you're one to comment under that disguise, please tell me who you are. Thanks in advance. (I updated this since someone just said something pretty rude here. Stop being a coward who hides behind a screen!)
Jenn ❤️

Agree with you on not caring for curry! I think it's great that you've started walking and enjoy it! My sister and I were just talking about the joys of walking and physical activity. I also think it spurs good conversations- you aren't looking at the person you're walking and talking with and that different perspective can affect conversations (I think generally in a good way!). Have a great day!
ReplyDeleteYes to the walking! I started doing this, but then I stopped and need to get back to the practice as often as possible. I love walking with friends, though! I hope you have a great day, my friend!
DeleteI can't do curry either! My friend has a curry chicken salad recipe and she loves it but NO CAN DO!
ReplyDeleteNope! I can't either.
DeleteI am cracking up at your answer to something/someone who adds spice and you said Stella- cracking me up- I give you an A for trying to like her- ha!!!
ReplyDeleteWell, obviously J adds spice to my life, but am I talking about him here too much? 🤣 Well, I think she'll be sticking around here with me more as she gets older, so I need to treat her accordingly. I've never been mean to her or anything, I'm just impatient and have been unwilling to watch her at all. She is getting better each day, though, and I speak to her with a sweeter and softer voice now in an effort to reassure her. This makes me sound terrible! Let's just go back to talking about J. 🤣
DeleteI have heard of that Everything Bagel spice, it sounds so good but I have never tried it. When every something needs curry powder I always add half of what is needed or less, I am a wimp when it comes to spicy food.
ReplyDeleteHave fun at the concerts! I am the same with my Spotify playlists. I have one for each mood and season.
You should try it sometime! It's so good. Thanks for the advice on the curry!
DeleteYep we always go light on the amount of curry spices needed for a recipe!
ReplyDeleteGood to know in case I ever decide to try it again!
DeleteFirst-no to Curry! and my other go to spice besides S&P would also have to be everything but the bagel! I'm amazed at how good and versatile it is! yummy! Also, I think most people have playlists that vary-I know I do! I love my morning music to be worship, but my commute to work I love a good jam session! LOL I wanted to let you know I've been a reader of your blog for a while now, but just recently started commenting. You've inspired me in a lot of ways. I'm leading a ladies small group this summer (huge leap of faith for me, or stupidity Ha) and it's based on the scripture Nehemiah 8:10. We're talking about Joy-specifically how to have joy that is Godly. Anyway, I've rambled. Blessings to you!
ReplyDeleteI appreciate your sweet words, my friend! I am so excited to hear that you're leading a Bible study this summer; it'll be one of the best things you could ever do, and I think it'll be a blessing to both you and the friends who you invite into your life to do this. That will be so good! I love the book of Nehemiah, and look forward to hearing more about it as time goes on this summer. Take care! I'm so glad we're getting to know each other through this happy little space!
DeleteI love those activities and I also wish I could play the piano. Enjoy your day!
ReplyDeleteMe too! Thanks, friend. I hope you do the same! I'm sure we'll talk at some point.
DeleteWhat a fun link-up! I feel like we put chupacabra seasoning on everything around here. lol
ReplyDeleteIt is fun! I don't know what that is, but I'm about to Google it now. 🤣
DeleteNo curry here either! But I agree - walking is a great activity. Would always recommend that one. And yes that puppy is awful cute:)
ReplyDeleteIt's funny that so many people feel the same about that spice. I hope you're well, my friend!
DeleteReading all the curry comments everywhere has me smiling. We like curry as a dish. Our curries for the most part do not call for the spice curry powder which I think is something many don't care for. They are a mix usually of garam masala, cumin, paprika, etc. I do like the spice curry powder, but when I hear the word curry I think of the spicy stews we make. We listen to all kinds of music here too. There's a song for every mood : ) Have a great day!
ReplyDeleteI've never had it as a dish, but I'm guessing I would like it if it doesn't have actual curry powder. Thanks for the fun link up!
DeleteI don't know that I've ever had curry; I know I don't like cumin or cilantro but those are the only 2 I can think of off the top of my head that I don't like (though there are plenty we never ever seem to use). We use a lot of garlic in our cooking; I've heard it helps keep ticks away and since we hike so much I figured it couldn't hurt (and none of us have had Lyme/tick bites since so *knocks wood* I think it's working). Plus I really like the taste of garlic-- whether it's fresh, garlic powder, garlic salt, etc. I'm pretty liberal with it.
ReplyDeleteI use lots of garlic, too! I have a thing for food being seasoned well, either with salt/pepper or more than that.
DeleteThank you so much for sharing that song! I haven't heard it and love it. I agree about the spices. No thanks to curry. I also like the TJ's green goddess spice mix. Good for you for deleting those anon comments!
ReplyDeleteYou're welcome! I loved it when I first head the song. Oooohhh, I will have to try that one! Thanks, friend!
DeleteEnjoyed your answer. I like everything bagel seasoning too.
ReplyDeleteThank you! It's such a great spice blend.
